Characters for an apocalyptic ensemble piece...
...normally when I write a screenplay, the idea comes from a question. "What would happen if..." and the characters are easy to create, based on the question. The question itself usually necessitates certain characters. This time though, I have an idea for a post apocalyptic movie (I don't want to give the specifics away) but it needs a wide variety of characters, ages, races, etc. I really don't know where to begin to pick, it seems so arbitrary. Has anyone tackled this problem before? Thank you for any suggestions.
1) Write what you know: That might be a good start. Try basing a character on someone you know, Maybe your old shop teacher from high school or a boss that you had, a friend, an Ex or your mom and dad, see what happens.
Try breaking a stereo type: Take a character we have seen before and then give them a twist or have then grow in a strange way, The gang banger becomes a pacifist as the script progresses, the soccer mom becomes a vicious killer and so on...
Those would be two ideas off the top of my head.

Great feedback, thank you...I will try all those things.
